Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program available at 12 locations in Tarrant County

United Way of Tarrant County today announced the opening of its 12 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Community Tax Centers, which are located throughout Tarrant County.

VITA is a free income tax preparation program for individuals and households with an income of $60,000 or less. Qualifying individuals receive quality tax preparation services from IRS-certified volunteers. Tax center locations can be found at www.unitedwaytarrant.org/vita. Tax centers are open through April 15.

“United Way of Tarrant County is committed to providing professional tax preparation at no cost to ensure families and individuals are maximizing their returns,” said Leah King, president and CEO of United Way of Tarrant County. “The free service is a great resource for those who can’t afford a CPA or paid service. Volunteers at the tax centers also offer referrals to financial education and coaching to help clients create a path to financial stability.”

Individuals and families who want to participate in the VITA program need to bring the following items to the Community Tax Center of their choice:

  • Photo ID
  • Original Social Security card or ITIN for each person listed on the tax return
  • Copy of last year’s tax return
  • All W-2 wage statements for 2020
  • 1099 SSA, 1099-R and 1099-G
  • Cash income amount and work expenses
  • 1095 Health coverage form
  • Direct deposit information

Due to COVID-19, VITA is using a virtual rather than a face-to-face process. Taxpayers are invited to call for an appointment or drive up with their documents, drop them off to a waiting volunteer and then park nearby while their tax return is prepared; on days when demand is high, clients may need to set an appointment to return to complete the filing. Information for specific sites can be found at www.unitedwaytarrant.org/vita.

For the past 11 years, VITA volunteers have prepared more than 60,000 returns, helping return more than $120 million in tax refunds to Tarrant County families and our community.
