Just prior to her wedding day in 2017, Amber received the devastating news that she would need to undergo major life changing surgery – a radical double mastectomy and hysterectomy. What was to follow for the next year was many surgeries, followed by a year out of work and without pay. A mother of four and a veteran with military sexual trauma and PTSD, she struggled with the self-blame of not being able to provide for her family. Although her husband continually worked overtime, Amber’s inability to work took its toll and they found themselves behind on their mortgage by $9,000 and at risk of becoming homeless.
