Home Modifications Helped Restore Kenneth’s Independence

Thursday, December 1, 2022

When Tarrant County resident Kenneth Fable suffered from heat stroke during last summer’s heat wave, his whole world was upended. He underwent extensive physical therapy and now relies on a walker to get around.

Kenneth and his wife Donna leaned on United Way of Tarrant County’s Area Agency on Aging (AAA) to help them get the needed home modifications for Kenneth’s safety.

AAA is dedicated to improving the lives of older adults, those with disabilities and their caregivers. The agency accomplishes this with the expertise of its own professionals and by partnering with various community organizations that share the same mission of serving older adults.

AAA contracted with Lookup Remodel to connect with Kenneth and Donna. The company installed ramps on their home’s front and back doors and grab bars in the bathroom. With these modifications, Kenneth can move more independently around his home and feels more secure knowing he can evacuate his home faster in an emergency.

Additionally, the improvements provided some relief for Donna, Kenneth’s primary caregiver, who, prior to the modifications, assisted him with routine tasks such as bathing and using the restroom. She’s thankful Kenneth now has a sense of freedom and safety.

These small home improvements can have a big impact on the mental and physical health of older and disabled adults, resulting in feeling more confident within their own homes, a priceless comfort.

For anyone that struggles with moving freely, home modifications such as wheelchair ramps and bathroom grab bars are always in high demand. As part of a newly funded program, AAA is expanding its safety modifications to homes in Fort Worth, thanks to a grant from the City of Fort Worth.
