Two older veterans conversing

After 14 years in the U.S. Air Force, with assignments in California, England, Guam and Thailand, Jim Gasaway returned home carrying more than memories. During his time on a B-52 unit in Thailand, he was exposed to harmful chemicals that later affected his health.

For decades, Jim lived with the impact in silence. Then he connected with one of our Mission United Texas Veteran Network intake specialists, all of whom are veterans or military spouses who truly understand the needs of our clients. She referred him to the Texas Veterans Commission, where he filed a disability claim with the VA.

Thanks to that support, Jim was awarded 80% disability. The benefits helped him pay his bills and put food on the table.

Most importantly, it brought him peace of mind.

United Way’s Mission United veterans service program provides full-service support to Texas veterans, active-duty military members and their families, linking them with community resources across 254 counties. Veteran support across Texas includes employment and career growth, health and wellness services, education and training opportunities, social and community engagement, and housing and basic needs.

Jim’s story shows that support is available, and it is never too late to reach out. Mission United is here for our veterans — ready to listen, respond and walk beside them toward a better tomorrow.
