From Service to Support: Jim’s Journey with Mission United

Monday, September 8, 2025

Countless veterans live each day carrying the physical and emotional toll of their service. Some face injuries or illnesses that never fully heal yet go without the benefits they’ve earned. Without a trusted guide, navigating the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) system can feel overwhelming. As a result, too many veterans struggle to pay for housing, food and medical care, all while managing the lasting effects of their service.

For decades, U.S. Air Force veteran Jim Gasaway was one of them.

Jim served for 14 years with assignments in California, England, Guam and Thailand. While stationed in Thailand, he was exposed to harmful chemicals. The long-term effects on his health followed him home. For years, he managed those challenges on his own, not realizing that support was within reach.

That changed when he connected with Mission United, a United Way of Tarrant County initiative that supports veterans, active-duty service members and their families. The program uses the Texas Veterans Network, innovative technology operated in partnership with Combined Arms, to quickly link veterans to trusted services and support.

When Jim reached out, he needed help navigating the complex VA system. Kara Woodruff, an intake specialist with Mission United, connected him with the Texas Veterans Commission, who helped Jim begin the process of filing a disability claim.

Thanks to that support, Jim received an 80% disability rating from the VA, qualifying him for monthly, tax-free compensation that helped cover his basic needs. For Jim, the benefits were more than financial relief, but a long-awaited peace of mind.

“I’m so thankful for the help,” said Jim. “It made such a big difference for me.”

Jim’s experience is one of many. In 2024, Mission United supported more than 40,000 veterans and military families across Texas.

“Seeing success stories like Jim’s, as well as other veterans, is what keeps not only myself, but the entire intake team with Mission United and the Texas Veterans Network motivated,” Kara said. “Our intake team consists of veterans and veterans’ spouses, and we love helping the veterans of Texas and giving back to the community.”

Jim’s journey is a reminder that sometimes, support is only one phone call away and it is never too late to reach out. To learn more about Mission United or get connected to services, visit unitedwaytarrant.org/get-help/veterans-and-active-duty-military
