From Client to Connection: How One VITA Volunteer Found Purpose in Every Return

Monday, October 6, 2025

During tax season, most people think about deadlines, documents and deductions. But for Katrena Pitts, volunteering with United Way of Tarrant County's VITA program meant something much more — connection.

Katrena joined the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program while pursuing her Accredited Financial Counselor certification. What began as a step toward professional growth quickly evolved into a powerful experience of community service.

“Every member of the team advocated for each client that we served,” said Katrena. “From welcoming the clients to the center, to holding the door as they walked out, we wanted the best experience for the clients.”

VITA volunteers provide free tax preparation to households earning $67,000 or less. Since 2010, the program has filed more than 100,000 tax returns and saved residents $22 million in tax preparation fees. Volunteers assist clients in maximizing refunds to cover essentials such as rent, groceries and utilities while also connecting them with resources like financial coaching and workforce training.

Katrena volunteered for more than 50 hours during the 2025 tax season at the Community Enrichment Center in North Richland Hills, working with dozens of neighbors, each with a unique story. While many came in simply to complete a return, the experience often led to deeper conversations and moments of connection.

“For the clients we served, they felt relieved to have their taxes completed in just a few hours,” she said. “Some arrived fearful that their returns would be too complicated or beyond our capabilities and were pleasantly surprised and appreciative when they saw how well staffed and prepared we were.”

Unexpectedly, many clients stayed to talk, not just about taxes, but about their lives.

“They shared stories about concerts they’d attended, funny family moments, recent losses of loved ones, or even big accomplishments like weight loss journeys,” said Katrena. “They came to my table as clients, but in a small and temporary way, walked away as friends.”

VITA’s impact comes from those human moments. You don’t need to be a tax expert to volunteer. Roles fit a variety of interests and schedules, from greeting clients and assisting with intake to interpreting or running office errands. For those preparing or reviewing returns, full training and IRS certification are provided.

“The volunteers I worked with had decades of experience and were always there to help,” she said. “I learned something new in every session.”

Katrena is already signed up for another year of volunteering, a decision she says came easily after such a meaningful first season.
