A Supreme Honor
Here’s a milestone worth celebrating at the highest level — literally: our teammate Shakita Johnson was sworn into the bar by the U.S. Supreme Court, an honor that underscores the remarkable talent and leadership she brings as UWTC’s executive vice president and chief aging services officer.
Shakita, along with her husband, son and parents, traveled to Washington, D.C., for this invitation-only opportunity. It came about through Texas A&M University School of Law, where Shakita earned her law degree and remains an active supporter of the school.
“What’s most meaningful to me is that I would be presented to the highest court in the land as an exemplar of what it means to be an Aggie Lawyer – respect, excellence, leadership, loyalty, integrity and selfless service!”
She has used these traits in her legal career as an administrative law judge, where she heard health care enforcement cases, and in her current role at UWTC, where she leads the Area Agency on Aging of Tarrant County (AAATC). By overseeing all programs and services for older adults, she helps ensure they can remain independent and safe, connecting them to the resources they may need.
“No two days are the same, but every day is mission-driven,” Shakita says.
She also helps direct resources across services and nonprofit partners, which helps strengthen the community’s support system. Beyond managing AAATC programs, she advocates at the local, state, and federal levels to ensure policymakers are informed of the needs of older adults and caregivers in Tarrant County.
Shakita’s close relationships with her grandparents and great-grandparents sparked her passion for advocating for older adults, especially after her great-grandmother became ill and revealed the significant physical, emotional and financial challenges caregivers face.
“The turning point came when I discovered resources that could have greatly helped my family when we needed them most - resources we were never told about.”
In her downtime, Shakita loves to spend time with her family, whether that is playing games, recharging together or indulging in her love for British television.
We're proud to spotlight Shakita’s care for others and her passion for making a real difference every day. Learn more about the support Shakita and her team provides to the community: https://www.unitedwaytarrant.org/what-we-do/area-agency-aging-aaa
