Making a difference both in the office and out in the field, meet Crystal Johnson, Care Coordination Director for UWTC's Area Agency on Aging (AAA).
No two days look exactly alike for Crystal. She leads the strategy, funding, and daily operations for AAA's direct services while also conducting home visits and assessing clients' needs firsthand. She also oversees a team of navigators and intake staff who partner with older adults and their families.
"Together, we connect seniors with the essential resources and community support they need to live safely and independently in their own homes."
For Crystal, some of the most meaningful moments come after navigating the behind-the-scenes work of funding and approvals and seeing what that support can make possible for a client.
“For my clients, a wheelchair ramp is more than just a piece of aluminum or wood; it is the bridge between isolation and community inclusion.”
For Veteran Mark Stevens, that bridge meant getting back to something he loves. Unable to walk because of severe cellulitis, Mark had been stuck indoors and unable to care for his beloved wisteria, a source of joy and peace. After Crystal helped secure him a new ramp, Mark was excited to get back outside and grateful for the freedom it provided.
"My experience working with Mark was a profound reminder of why I chose social work. What began as a routine assessment became a meaningful connection. Our conversation naturally evolved past his concrete needs, opening space for him to share his military background and life journey."
When she's not at work, Crystal loves exploring new places and making memories with her family.
