BACKGROUNDER

United Way makes an impact in Tarrant County in two ways. Number one, it helps individuals in need  through programs that stabilize their lives. United Way works to create better lives for families, children, people with health concerns, people in crisis and senior citizens.

It does this by supporting a wide variety of important services, such as shelter for the homeless, protection from domestic violence, youth development programs and mental health services. It's a joint effort of many volunteers and dozens of nonprofit agencies.

The second way United Way makes an impact is by creating lasting changes in the community. It focuses on the underlying causes of problems. The best way to help the most people is to get to the heart of serious, communitywide problems and prevent them in the first place.

But it takes teamwork. That's why United Way brings together businesses, government, neighborhoods, faith groups, nonprofits and individuals to get results that no one can accomplish alone.

United Way and its community partners are currently tackling five important issues: child abuse and neglect; early learning and development; childhood obesity; adult literacy; and senior isolation. No matter what it takes--fund raising, going to City Hall or just getting people to work together--that's what United Way does to get results.

Besides its Fort Worth office, Tarrant County United Way has offices in Bedford and Arlington. The Arlington office, Arlington Human Service Planners, is a partnership of United Way and the City of Arlington. It provides research and recommendations that assist in the development of human services.

United Way-Northeast in Bedford supports nonprofit organizations, faith-based groups and neighborhood associations as they provide human services in Northeast Tarrant County. Volunteers evaluate the area's needs and bring together relevant partners to address them.

Services that United Way provides directly to the community include a free information and referral service called 2-1-1 Texas. It links callers who dial 2-1-1 with appropriate health and human services 24 hours a day. Another part of United Way is the Area Agency on Aging, which plans, funds, coordinates and provides human care services for older adults. The United Way Days of Caring program helps groups of volunteers from businesses do service projects at nonprofit agencies and other organizations involved in specific United Way initiatives.
