The
2006 Tarrant County United Way campaign has exceeded its $24
million goal. Volunteers raised a total of $24,055,000.
Campaign Success Stories
Campaign
leaders originally thought the annual fund drive would fall
short at 99.2 percent of the goal. However, the campaign
ultimately was nudged past the goal by additional
contributions, including workplace pledges gathered by the
United Way of Metropolitan Dallas that were designated to
Tarrant County’s Community Fund or specific Tarrant County
causes.
During the
2006 campaign as a whole,
20 local companies increased their giving to
United Way
by more than $10,000 each. Alcon led the way with an increase
of $90,000 in its workplace campaign. Others leading the
charge in increased giving were Lockheed Martin Aeronautics
Company / Employees of LM AERO Club, which increased giving by
approximately $68,800, and Bell Helicopter/Employees Humanity
Fund, with a campaign that raised $58,000 more than the
previous year. DFW Airport increased its giving by $35,000
over the previous year.
Three Two-Million Dollar Companies
Three companies combined corporate gifts with employee contributions to
donate more than two million dollars to the
2006 United Way campaign:
-
Alcon
$2.5 million
-
Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company/LM AERO
$2.024 million
-
BNSF Railway
$2 million
Those
donations account for one-fourth of the 2006 campaign.
Organized labor, through 43 participating unions, gave
approximately one-fifth of the campaign.
The 2006
campaign victory was achieved in spite of $1 million in decreases from companies that
historically gave large amounts. “Some of our community’s best
supporters faced business situations that made it difficult
for them to raise as much as they have in the past,” said Bob
Pence,
2006 Tarrant
County United Way campaign chair (pictured above).
Tim Carter,
CEO of Tarrant County United Way, explained that an additional
$1 million usually included in the Tarrant County reporting is
not included this year, even though it does not reduce the
funding in the community.
“In the past,
we have handled a part of the U.S. Federal Government
campaign,” Carter said. “This year, that campaign was
consolidated within Dallas United Way. Tarrant County will
still receive its share of federal employee donations, but did
not have to handle the fundraising or take on the
administrative costs associated with that campaign.”
The fund
drive encompassed campaigns at more than 800
Tarrant
County
workplaces.
Contributions
to the campaign support two platforms.
First, United Way
continues its traditional funding for service providers who
must have help with immediate needs for children, seniors,
families and those with health problems. A second focus for
United Way is its work to address the root causes of five key
issues facing the County: early childhood development and
learning, child abuse and neglect, senior isolation, adult
literacy and childhood obesity.
In the area
of childhood obesity, for example,
United Way
is funding and overseeing a pilot program at
Mitchell
Boulevard
Elementary School.
The three-year program will introduce a number of innovative
ways to help families become more physically and nutritionally
healthy.
“Through this
two-pronged approach, United Way can address basic needs of
individuals while tackling the underlying causes and building
a stronger community for the future,” Carter said.
Tocqueville Society and Leadership Giving
Leading
community philanthropists continued to make their giving
spirits known through their impressive individual
contributions to United Way.
Members of
United Way’s Alexis de Tocqueville Society are local
individuals and philanthropic organizations who contribute
$10,000 or more annually. Leadership Givers donate between
$1,000 and $9,999 each year. This year, the Tocqueville
Society and Leadership Givers were responsible for nearly 25
percent of the United Way campaign.
