The Area Agency on Aging
of Tarrant County supports the network of
services for older citizens throughout
Tarrant County through:
Advocacy
We identify priority issues
and advocate for change. We support
the
Texas Silver-Haired Legislature
election every two years. The
elected
delegates, age 60 and over, represent senior
concerns to
the state
legislature.
Funding
Using Older Americans Act
funds from the Texas Department on Aging, we
contract with local organizations to provide
needed services for people age 60 and older.
We also determine how some annual United Way
campaign funds are used to fund older adult
services in
Tarrant
County.
United Way sponsors the Area Agency on Aging
and provides it with in-kind support.
Information
and Referral (2-1-1 Texas)
We provide some
of the funding for
2-1-1 Texas, a free service that
provides information about support services
for older adults, housing, transportation
and other non-emergency assistance.
Leadership
We provide leadership
opportunities for older adults as policy
makers and decision makers on our
Advisory Council and committees,
and coalitions and collaborations.
Outreach
We provide outreach to
multi-ethnic, special-needs populations and
caregivers of older adults. Through
Access &
Assistance (case management), we
help adults age 60 and over, and their
caregivers, obtain services needed to
help older adults remain in their own homes
as long as possible. We provide
benefits
counseling services to those
60
and above, as well as to those who are
otherwise eligible for Medicare. As part of
the Relatives as Parents Coalition, we also
sponsor support
groups and
respite services
for people who are
rearing
their relatives’ children.
Planning
We evaluate the need for
aging services and develop service
strategies.
Public
Awareness
The
Legal Awareness
Program offers group
presentations in order to inform older
adults and service providers about benefits
and issues affecting the lives of older
adults.
2-1-1 Texas is
the aging resources information and referral
service provider for the Area Agency on
Aging. Dialing 2-1-1 connects callers
with free information about housing,
transportation and other services for older
adults and those who care for them.
