United Way makes an impact in the community by meeting
emergency needs and providing safe shelter. In
Tarrant
County, one in nine people lives in poverty, and an emergency
can push many families over the edge. More
than 5,200 people are homeless here, including hundreds of
children. Women and their children flee from domestic
violence, sometimes with little more than the clothes on their
backs.
United Way helps people get back on their feet. Working
through other local organizations, it provides emergency food,
clothing, housing and financial assistance.
2-1-1, the
information and referral service operated by
United Way
in this area, connects almost 79,000 callers a year to a
variety of essential community services. 2-1-1 staff were very
involved in assisting the thousands of Hurricane Katrina and
Rita evacuees who came to Tarrant County and continue to help
lead long-term recovery efforts.
Community support in a crisis: that's what matters.
