Cha-ching! Jingle bells jingle, but so do coins. And LOTS of coins made a merry sound recently as contributions to the United Way student coin campaign poured into United Way from every corner of the Fort Worth Independent School District.
Plastic bags of coins. Plastic milk bottles of coins. Even a plastic sand pail of coins. All were waiting as teams of United Way and FWISD staff made the rounds of more than 90 schools to pick up the student donations of change and paper
money over the course of a week. While a little more money may still trickle in, the FWISD student campaign already has raised almost $58,000!
Schools use a variety of creative ways to generate enthusiasm for their United Way campaigns. John T. White Middle School sponsored a “students vs. staff” basketball game for United Way (pictured at right). And at Woodway Elementary School, Principal Terry McGuire (shown below) bravely fulfilled her promise to kiss a chicken in front of the grade
that raised the most money.
The coin campaign benefits both the community and the students, according to United Way CEO Tim McKinney. “It is an annual opportunity for students to learn about the needs of the community and how to meet them,” he said. “They help the community by becoming a new generation of contributors.”
