At lunch today, I heard someone say that “we are not red states and we are not blue states, but we are the UNITED STATES!” I, for one, appreciated the service and commitment that President Bush gave to our country. But after yesterday’s inauguration I sense a feeling of energy and rejuvenation throughout our nation that rarely has happened before in my lifetime.

President Obama and his administration face tremendous challenges in these historical times. It is in everyone’s best interest to wish him well and hope that he succeeds in soon lifting our economy out of its current doldrums.

However, we should not look to government as the end all to solve our problems. There are limits to how much we should expect government to do. We, the American citizenry, have a greater role to play. We have a responsibility to help each other in challenging times as the one that we now face.

President Obama has emphasized the importance of community service and what role that it can assume in improving the current state of affairs that the nation now faces. Everyone can play an important role.

If you are not involved then I urge you to get involved in something that is important to you and in which you feel that your involvement can make a positive difference. And consider volunteering with the United Way or one of our 43 partner agencies.

Get involved, stay involved and LIVE UNITED!
