Transportation Services

Approximately 21,000 older Tarrant County residents do not have a car, making transportation a need for older adults.

Texas Department on Aging statistics indicate that more than 39 percent of African-American seniors and 37 percent of Hispanics do not have a car at their household. By comparison, only 14.5 percent of white seniors have no car at home.

The Area Agency on Aging provides funding for two services to help address this need:

Transportation to Medical Services and Senior Centers
WHEELS, a special transportation service sponsored by the American Red Cross, Chisholm Trail Chapter, assists the elderly and physically disabled with transportation to medical appointments, the pharmacy and the hospital. WHEELS also transports older adults to senior citizen centers for nutritious meals and programs.

Services are available Monday through Friday. There is no set fee for Tarrant County residents age 60 and older, but voluntary donations are appreciated.

WHEELS is the only countywide transportation service that picks up and delivers customers with special needs door-to-door. WHEELS uses 43 vehicles, including 35 that are wheelchair accessible. For more information, call Transportation Director Leah Schumann at 817-335-9138, extension 232, or visit
