Home Instead Senior Care, the world’s largest home care company, has donated $25,000 to Neighbor Helping Neighbor (NHN), the United Way/Area Agency on Aging initiative that improves the lives of isolated seniors. Led by owners Kim Meyers and John Rotan, Home Instead Senior Care’s local office also participated in a United Way Day of Caring service project in Sansom Park October 11.
Home Instead employees helped an 89-year-old woman whose home had fallen into disrepair. They tore down a rotting deck, cleaned up scattered debris, cut down overgrown trees and built a wheelchair ramp so the woman, who needs an electric scooter to move around, could use her backyard.
Now in its third year, NHN connects and coordinates local groups that provide yard maintenance, wheelchair ramps, shopping assistance and other help to isolated older adults. This month it is starting projects in Lake Worth and River Oaks.
Other NHN projects have served almost 4,100 older adults in the Azle, Central Arlington, Haltom City, Handley/Meadowbrook and Historic Southside in Fort Worth, North Richland Hills and Sansom Park/Western Hills/White Settlement areas. Expansion into Fort Worth’s Greater Stop Six and North Side neighborhoods is planned for the first part of 2009.
Neighbor Helping Neighbor recently received an Aging Achievement Award from the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.
